Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson and his partner, Fran Walsh, won't be tackling a film version of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit or a second proposed Rings prequel film after New Line told them the studio would be seeking another director, Jackson and Walsh told fans on the OneRing.net Web site. Jackson said that New Line producer Mark Ordesky told Jackson's manager, Ken Kamins, that the studio was moving ahead with the project without Jackson and Walsh because the pair declined to agree to do The Hobbit as a condition of settling a lawsuit against New Line to recoup income from the Rings films.
Ah -- nothing like toying with the quality of your movies in an effort to escape a legal obligation.
Oh well, they're bound to get the movie wrong no matter who directs it.
I have to admit between this and the decision of two movies I'm losing hope of this living up to the legacy.
The one story I found had a letter from Peter Jackson with some of the reasons why problems have occurred with him directing The Hobbit.
I don't know with someone else if it will be quite the same. Also I don't know what to think about them mentioning it being another 2 or 3 movies. I can see it becoming a bit dragged out so they can try and milk the success if LOTR for as much more money as possible.
Well from what I understand the first movie be The Hobbit adapted from the book. The second movie will basically be a story pieced together from the Simarillion and other sources.
I'm not sure how that is going to turn out but could be interesting. I just don't think they should brand the second movie as The Hobbit - call Tales of Middle Earth or some such.
